NOMED – NCBiR

The project NOMED-AF aims to develop monitoring system based on telemedicine technology capable of discovering atrial fibrillation (AF) and applying the system in calculating AF incidence in 65+ population in Poland. Ischaemic stroke is one of the most common causes of death and disablement and its treatment constitutes a significant part of the costs of healthcare. AF is a known risk factor in ischaemic stroke. Anticoagulation therapy reduces the risk of embolic stroke. Many cases of atrial fibrillation remain undiscovered. It is estimated that 20-30% of strokes of non-defined etiology are caused by atrial fibrillation. The project’s objective is to solve the problem.
First phase of the project has  been dedicated to the development of a diagnostic device capable of discovering atrial fibrillation. In the second phase, the device has been validated in order to estimate its sensitivity and specificity in discovering AF in a population of patients with implanted ICD. The last phase of the project will consist of epidemiological survey measuring the incidence of AF in high-risk population.
